Everyone gets their start in gaming somewhere.  My start came from my mom.  I always laugh when I think about it but when I was growing up I would see my mom playing online.  These memories are mostly from when I was younger.  She is a former army veteran who has worked in the financial industry since she retired from the army.  So as you can imagine that when I was remembering exactly how I got my start into gaming I was surprised to recall it was my mom who played MUD’s on the computer, who bought us every game system as it came out.  She even convinced my grandma to let us keep the atari!   She bought us computer games and many other electronic things.  I watched my mom play many hours of game online with her buddies from base when I was growing up not really knowing what it was I watching.  We actually just discussed online game play recently.  Once she retired the gaming did also.  She did continue to play through us kids though.  My first game on the computer was Frontier.  In between Frontier and King’s Quest (which I know is not RPG at all) I don’t remember anything.  I also think that I played games that I don’t consider to be RPG’s, not because they weren’t but becuase I was so ignorant of what the genre was that it didn’t add up in my head.

I’ve noticed that my life is spaced with times of gaming and times of sheeping (inactivity).  For example, my mom started me on Frontier but after that I didn’t play any games, doing lord knows what in my free time.  I do remember Zelda and all those other games but liek a few others once I got to the part in Zelda where you had to come out of the tomb and walk north through sankes I kept dying, and then I gave up all together.  This was followed by Kings Quest the adventure series.  From there I moved on to building games like SimCity, but my all time favorite is Pharaoh the video game.  I actually still have my original disk and expansion that I installed on our extra PC and still play.  From there more sheeping happened and I followed what everyone else was doing, which at the moment I don’t remember so it couldn’t have been that great.

I didn’t start playing MMO’s again until my I met my husband.  He was and still is playing Star Wars Galaxies and tried to get me into that game.  I just couldn’t do it.  He grew up loving and being addicted to Star Wars.  I couldn’t get into the game play as it didn’t hold the same appeal to me.  At that time I played mostly console games on XBOX and a few others.  I LOVE Elder Scrolls…I mean who doesn’t, and I say that just because I know it is a love it or hate it game.  🙂

After a while I bounced around and tired a few different things.  I tried Guild Wars too.  It was such a turn off to log in and immediately be accosted by horny 14-year-old boys wanting to group and pretend to be boyfriend/girlfriend.  I bought the game pack, used it about 4 times and then quit.  What a waste of what could have been a good game.

Finally one Derby party and a few drinks later our mutual family friends told me how they play WoW.  The Party was on a Saturday, as the Derby always is, and the very next day I went out and bought the trial version.  I loved it right away.  It had the MMO feel I wanted with out the Star Warsyness.  Bonus: My husband got hit on more on his female toon then I did or do on mine.  LOL.  I went out 3 days later to buy the full game and expansion and have been playing ever since.  My husband has since left me to return to his lover, Galaxies, leaving me with my new WoW community.

I Love you WoW community!

    King’s Quest and Pharaoh! <3!!!!

I grew up on King's Quest! My parents were super strict when it came to gaming, so for the longest time, King's Quest games were among the only games I was allowed to play and they were by far my favorite. The Perils of Rosella is still one of my favorite games.

As for Pharaoh, if we're thinking of the same game, I still play it once in awhile! It was my game of choice throughout my first college degree, but I never managed to beat it before my computer died. There's a Greek version of the game too called Zeus, but it's not as good.

I think we might be talking about the same Pharaoh! I also played it through my last couple years of college. In between writing papers and research it was a less intense game than I think WoW is for me and it was complete fun. My box set has Pharaoh, Cleopatra, and Caesar…there was an add on the back for Zues. LOL You what they say…Great Minds and all that.
